JDM engines are used engines taken from cars salvaged in Japan, and shipped to the USA for consumption here. They are no more or no less reliable than any used engine that you would find in a junk yard here in the USA.

If anything the JDM motor would be more reliable. in Japan, it is ilegal to keep your same motor when it reaches about 60k miles due to strict emission laws. so the owners sell the car for a new one, or swap the motor, then either way they import the motor because it can no longer be used in japan.

Most importers do NOT rebuild the motors. Most of the reputable importers, such as Specializing in JDM-USDM Engines & Parts...hmotorsonline.com, sell the motors as they came out of the car, and offer a startup warranty.

I have done dozens of swaps using the JDM motors. There is no reason to question their reliability. Most of the time a problem can be attributed to poor maintenance.
