Default 94 civic

Hello, I'm helping a friend of mine get his car back in shape. He has a 1994 civic with the vtech engine. The car started over heating and he found the radiator was bad. We replaced the radiator and the car still over heated on him. He claims to be losing fluid in excess but i see no evidence of a leak anywhere on the ground or in the engine compartment. I suspected a head gasket and had him turn the car over with the radiator cap off. water shot out of the radiator which confirmed my suspicions. The car runs fine other than the over heating so my question is.
Is this common on this yr car or could this be a cracked head and is there a way to check one from the other, meaning bad gasket or cracked head?

Thanks in advance.
