Default 1994 Honda Accord EX Fuel Delivery Problem...possible PGM-FI Relay prob. loof catches though...

Ok I have maintained both my 1994 and my girlfriends 1995 Honda Accord EX and they're both at 160,000 almost effortlessly but it seems like mine is having more problems recently than hers..

My car would not start the other day. The fuel pump would not run for 2 seconds upon ignition and the PGM-FI would not click. I thought instantly *fuel pump*.

Why did I instantly think it was the fuel pump?

My Accord has had an *apparent* weak fuel pump for 2 years. What I mean by this is if my tank is below a quarter of a tank and I go to stop it seems to loose fuel pressure and will either sputter out while the fuel slushes around in the tank or it will stall. Absolutely won't happen if I have more gas in the tank. Also seems to vary by quality of gas but that is off topic.

I had the fuel filter replaced but that didn't help any.

The fuel pump lives!

The fuel pump is not dead. While it would not run earlier that day around noon when it was hot outside, the fuel pump ran and the car started right up when I came home that night.

Same scenario happened today. No go this afternoon but when I put it through the ringer tonight and I had no problems starting.

PGM-FI

I thought "this has to be the PGM-FI". I warmed the car upto operating temp. tonight and ran the heater on the inside to get it nice and boiling like day time. I banged on the dash board trying to get the apparent intermittent relay to fail but could not. I continued to shut it off and turn the ignition on and 8 times in a row the fuel pump ran and the PGM-FI clicked but failed the 9th time....but it still fired up and ran. Probably primed enough by that time.

Other Problems (may or may not be related)

My accord will not hot start a lot of the time and the D4 will flash. It does not like to be turned off and started back up right away. If I do get it to start in that situation it will be stuck in fourth gear. Most of the time I have to leave it sit 10-30 minutes and it will start up and be fine. Resetting the TCM seemed to help one time but not another time.

I pulled the codes on that and it was 1, 7, 8. Problems which are described by the service manual as problems with solenoid valve A (for 1 and 7) and solenoid valve B (for 8).

I have *not* checked the TCM for a burnt resistor or leaking cap.

- Also my odometer stopped working, 99.99% not relevant and frankly don't care. Speedo and tach still work.

Any help would be appreciated. My fuel delivery problem could be numerous things and I would like all the advice I could get before I start diving into it.

Thank you.

Went back out and messed with it some more after it cooled back down. Started up once then started giving me some D4 blinking trouble and would not start. One time the fuel pump did not run when the ignition was turned on at first then a few seconds later it did. Kind of a combination with D4 blinking troubles.

The service manual showed the PGM-FI relay beside the stereo so I pulled the entire console apart LOL. I ended up taking out the heater mode control motor and pulling that open thinking it was the relay. LOL Took me an hour to put that back together.

Finally located the PGM-FI relay right above the brake pedal basically. Mine is gray instead of all the black ones I've seen so that threw me off. It must have been replaced already.

Well the circuit board was mostly burn brown discoloration and one cracked solder joint and a couple burned ones. I touched up all the joints with some high quality solder and it seemed to have worked like magic.

So far no fuel pump problems and no transmission problems. The car even shifts better and goes into lockup sooner. Apparently the TCM gets power from this relay and if it was giving it intermittent power that could explain my transmission troubles. I'm very happy right now but I need to give it more time before I'm 100% sure it was a fix.

Well it seems like you fixed it i guess. I dont see where you really need my help you tackled this on your own. Id keep track and make sure the car is still working right and it never hurts to have a dealership do a check. my dealership does it for free.
