Default 98 CRV occasionally won't start

HELP! My old CRV has intermittently been unable to start. Nothing will happen when the key turns in the ignition except a single click noise from over by the passenger side dashboard area. Windows will roll up and down, wipers work, etc. Just won't start. Other times it starts just fine. For example: My son calls Saturday (why always on a weekend?) and says the car won't start. I drive over and it starts immediately. After driving it around for the rest of the weekend, it won't start Monday morning no matter what. I try jump starting it, cleaning the battery terminals (it has a new battery), etc. So, I have it towed to the repair shop. Once there it starts up fine. The mechanic can't reproduce the problem after several days at the shop. We did the ignition recall. A new starter is expensive, so I want to be sure that's the problem before I go replacing it. This is driving me crazy.
