Default Does starting my Honda Civic, but not driving it, still charge my battery?

Hello All,

I have a 1998 Honda Civic Hatchback, and it works like a charm.

I rarely drive it, and it sits in my driveway and I start it about once every 4 to 6 days or so, and just let the motor run, but I don't drive it.

Does starting it, but not driving it, STILL recharge the battery? Or, do I have to absolutely drive the car the recharge the battery?

if its not a hybrid it will charge just when running the engine. You don't have to drive it.

I think you're better off driving it for that 20 minutes than letting it run or else you're just wasting gas. Make a trip to the grocery store or something.

Any motor has to attain a certain amount of revs for it to charge the battery. Ticking over will not charge the battery because the revs are to low. You have to drive it therefore, or as you say put it in a charger, but chargers have an adverse effect on a battery. Also to effectively charge with no battery damage you must have it on a trickle or very low amp setting unless you have an intellegent battery charger that is.

Also leaving a car ticking over will dirty its sparking plugs. the final result being the car will be unable to start until its plugs are cleaned. I hope that my answer helps you and answers your question.

Having it running spins the alternator therefore charging the battery. You dont really get any benefit from charging unless you let it run at least 20-30 minutes.

Yes it will still charge your battery even just starting it and not driving it. As long as your alternator is in good working condition it will still charge the battery. I have also some cars that i dont use it that much. I regularly start it twice or thrice a week to keep the battery charging and to keep the oil moving. In my experience your battery will last longer when you are using your car often than just starting it only. Hope this help!

Just running the car will charge the battery, but its better for the engine as a whole if the cars taken out and given some highway time.
