I never trusted changing oil by the mileage, i always go by color. check your oil color and level every week before you start it up in the morning, and when its getting dirty or low, get it changed.

There is no problem if you done your change oil 3,000 or 4,000 miles. You can do it earlier or after 4,000 and will have no problem with it. The most important thing is to regularly change it so that your car's engine will last longer. Hope this help!

I'd do whatever the owner's manual says. However, the best alternative is below.

You can't quite go by the color of the oil. The most accurate way of knowing is to get your oil analyzed. There are places that you can send samples of your oil into, and they'll give you a chemical breakdown of what's in it and a comparison of other folks who've sent in samples as well. I believe each analysis (basic?) is about 20 bucks.
