Default Is it possible a 1995 Honda Civic DX was built without power steering?

I'm thinking of buying my 17 year old son his first car but paying 3k seems a lot for a 1995 Honda Civic DX that has no power steering. I asked the private seller to add a power steering pump to the 1995 Honda Civic DX (manual 5-speed- engine replaced in 2005), but I was told if the car never had power steering it's not as easy as just installing a power steering pump as I hoped for. How can I find out if this is true about the power steering never being installed when built? My 17 yr old said no power steering if fine, personally I wouldn't deal with driving a car with no power steering, once mine went out and it was tough to deal with. Please reply if you know of anything that can help me to purchase this or not and why. Thank you.

They didn't come with it. And that's way too much money for a 16 yr old Honda Civic that probably cost about $11-12k new.

My 60 yr old mom drives her 97 around without it just fine. Its not that hard.

There are quite a few levels of trim (Or styles/models) of the Civic, DX being the entry level one, so it has less features than say, an EX which has many more.

I did some research and from what I can tell the entry level DX model did not come manufactured with power steering in 1995, and I think the seller you are talking to is telling the truth.

I have just recently bought a '98 Honda Civic EX and that has power steering, a VTECH engine (this translates to more power and better fuel economy) and all of the extra features you would expect. I only payed $3500 for this car, and it came with an upgraded sound system and 2 12" subs in the back. I think you may be overpaying a bit for your DX, but that's up to you! [:

Well, bear in mind that a car with power steering that is dead is TOTALLY different from a car that just doesn't have power steering, there's no comparison.

A car with manual steering is not bad to drive and steer at all. I had one way back in 1976 or so, and it was just fine. The ONLY thing that was a little bit difficult, and it wasn't even that bad at all, was parallel parking, and since no one does that much any more, don't worry about it. Really, it's fine, no problem.

On the other hand, in a car with dead power steering you're not only steering the car, you're fighting the dead power steering mechanism, too, and, yes, you're right, it is a killer, but that's NOT the same as a manual steering car, it's totally different, so don't judge by that at all, it's NOT the same!!

Good luck!... ?
