Default Coolant leak in my Honda Prelude?

I have a 1994 honda prelude. There is a really bad coolant leak, it completely drains out every day and the car overheats. It drains out of the actual radiator... the resoivoir seems to lose coolant too, but only tiny bits at a time

The oil and oil level is fine. Recently the heater core got bypassed... if thats of any help? Thanks

what could be the problem? would it be expensive to fix?

the usual cause is that the seal on the top tank of the radiator is ruptured and, as the coolant heats up, the coolant is lost as steam through the gap in the seal of the upper tank. Look at the area below the upper radiator tank (the upper radiator tank is the plastic piece that has the radiator filler cap on it and it is bonded to the metal part of the radiator). If you see signs of white powder, then you found your leak. the white residue is the minerals from the coolant that is leaking out.

To be certain, take your car to a mechanic and have the cooling system pressure tested. It takes about 5 minutes to do and it will 'force' whatever is leaking to leak so its easy to spot the problem.

heater cores don't usually leak on Hondas. Radiator top tanks are very, very common. the only solution if the top tank is leaking is to replace the radiator. you can buy a replacement radiator for about $100-150. figure another $50 to have someone else install it. You'll also need to replace the coolant when you do that , so figure about $20 for that.

hope that helps
