Angry 2003 CRV Misfire

My 03 CRV LX with about 250,000 miles has had reoccuring check engine lights and the independent service shop we use has advised it needs a new catalytic converter. They are apparently unable to actually verify it is the converter rather than a sensor so I've been reluctant to fork over the $2,000 they want to replace it.

Especially since on occasion the check engine light goes off by itself and generally remains off as long as we don't drive on the highway.

Recently on a short local trip and then again on a longer highway trip (about 1.5 hrs) I experienced a severe misfire if I exceeded 2,700 rpm. The misfire would continue until the revs dropped below about 2,200 rpm and then the engine would regain power and run normally unless I exceeded 2,700 rpm.

However on several subsequent local trips it ran fine without any misfiring even when accelerating hard enough to run up to 4,500 rpm shift points.

The only difference between the two was (maybe) weather; when it first misfired it was raining and the second time (on the highway) it was dry but had rained heavily for several days prior.

I'm thinking of replacing the coils (and spark plugs) and would appreciate advise as to what else should be considered. Or am I on the wrong track? Is there a "limp-home" mode in the ecu that is cutting off spark to 2 cylinders because of a catalytic converter fault?

Especially any advise as to the converter; is replacement something reasonably accomplished without torches, etc.?

Thanks to all in advance!

Ron
