Default manual transmission problem?

My son was driving his 96 honda civic and all of a sudden the wheels lock up, he left his car over night then we went back to check it out. We started it up and put it in gear (1st) and the car stalled out as if were a higher gear. Then put it in neutral to find that it actually engaged the transmission as if it were in first. Anyone got an idea of what this can be? Or any suggestions before we have to take it to the transmission shop? Were mostly do it yourselfers but transmissions are foreign to me! Thanks in advance for any info!

IM not a mechanic but ive driven a stick for a long time. Sounds like your transmission needs to be fixed. Somehow for some reason the shifter isnt in sync with the actual transmission anymore. As far as i kno i dont think u can recalibrate.. but not 100%. Its fixable but might be expensive. Theres no way you could fix it yourself, you need to bring it to a shop.

could be alot of things, clutch could be shot, linkage could be off, clutch fork could be broken, check clutch fluid (usually brake fluid) on a 96 civic should only be around $500 to replace clutch

If it was the clutch u wouldn't be able to engage the gear without grinding with the engine running Have u checked the gear linkage? and im almost sure there's a adjuster on the engine where u can adjust the gear selector
