Default Do I really need to use Honda oil in my new Civic? tia?

The manual specifies using Honda fluids for my 2010.

No - any quality motor oil is fine. But take them seriously about all the other fluids, especially the transmission fluid (automatic or manual) and the power steering fluid. The wrong PS fluid will do serious damage to Honda power steering. Non-Honda transmission fluid makes for harsh shifts (automatic) or balky shifting (manual). I even recommend getting coolant from Honda to be sure you are getting the right stuff.

In the same vein, when it comes time for a tune-up you can use any quality spark plugs. Other ignition parts should be genuine Honda if you have to replace them (less of a concern on your 2010 than on the older distributor models).

As for motor oil, you can use any API certified motor oil and stay with the viscosity that is listed on the oil cap. As far as others, for some reason Honda's are particular about everything else lubrication wise.
