Default need advice on swap vs. boosting a d15b civic89lx

i am wondering which avenue would be more reasonably doable, as well as cost effective. my civic has 94k miles on it and it has been treated well. My goal isnt to race the car at all. I would like enough power to carry the car full and my bicycles on a hitch or just even on my bike rack. i feel the car needs more power and maybe some new springs or something cause when i go on long trips it just struggles to get up to speed and it rides low.. its is an automatic and like i said i would like to accomplish more pulling power and endurance as i go on my trips. im thinking of a 1.6l dohc zc would do the trik but some forums out there advise just boosting the current engine...any advice would be helpful...thank you
