Question 2000 Honda Accord SE / Strange shifting / TPS?

Hi All,
  1. I have a 2000 Honda Accord SE with 106,000 miles on it. At 96,000 miles the original transmission had some serious gear problems. Apparently, 2000 Honda Accords transmissions were faulty, and were to be recalled, but I am not sure if Honda did. In any case, Honda paid 60%, and Guardian Warranty CO. paid 40% to replace the whole transmission. [BR]
  2. So in Dec of 08, at 96,000 miles, I got genuine Honda re-manufactured transmission with 30,000 miles or 3 years complete warranty. A dealership did this for me. I had to pay nothing.
  3. From the beginning of this April 2010, I am noticing that the gear shifts are slightly jerky, and they seem to lag slightly behind the speed. When the gear is about to shift, the RPM will keep increasing, and suddenly it will shift to a higher gear. This happens especially, when I am driving at lower RPMs (2000-2500), not driving aggressively.
  4. Interestingly, when I gradually press the throttle pedal to accelerate fast (not too fast either), the gear shift is rather smooth.
  5. It is sort of difficult to reproduce the problem. I took the car to the dealership, the guy took it for a ride, but I couldn't reproduce the problem nor during his drive the problem was very obvious. But I definitely feel it every once in a while. So the guy said, continue driving, if it gets worse, bring the car in.
  6. Sometimes, when I am reducing the speed, and gear is shifting down, sometimes i will see strange surge in the RPM, and car sort of lunges, or jerks.
  7. At lower speeds, the power does not seem to vary linearly with throttle. It feels like lagging. So after browsing around and reading a lot, I thought it could be my TPS.
  8. So I went out and bought a multi-meter. Connected pin-1, and pin-2 of TPS (with ignition everything off), waited for the resistance value to be steadied. Then moved the throttle pedal to see the variation in resistance. Then connected Pin-2, and 3; and also Pin-1, and 3 to see the variation in resistance as I pressed the throttle pedal.
  9. No matter which two pins were connected, the resistance did not vary, even though I pressed pedal from closed to wide open. This is really confusing. Either the TPS that I have does not have a potentiometer or there's something else. But, when I reconnected the TPS cable, and started the car, went around, everything worked okay, except the problems described above still exist.
  10. Please note that my CEL light has not come on since last transmission problem. It comes on, just before starting the car, and goes away when the car starts.
  11. Also, I rarely drive above 3000 RPM, b/c it significantly reduces my gas mileage.
  12. Please advise. Could my TPS be a problem? How do I check it? TPS is a Denso-made, I think.

Unhappy Re: 2000 Honda Accord SE / Strange shifting / TPS?

I've had the same problem as well, with my 2000 Honda accord ex 4cyl.
This usually happens when i accelerate and the rpm goes up pretty high around 4000rpm until it changes to 2nd; when it does change, the car jerks kinda like getting a "whiplash". At the same time, there would be no acceleration, i could floor it and it will slowly gain speed. I'm also thinking and hoping, that it's a TPS sensor instead of a trans. problem. OH! and the MIL is on with 'maint req'd

Any idea what the problem is?
