The sound is ominous. I suspect the timing belt has failed - you can remove the distributor cap and watch to see if the rotor moves when you crank the engine. (Ground the coil output wire while you crank the engine to protect the ignition coil.) If the rotor does not turn steadily as you crank the engine the timing belt has failed, and that is bad news for the engine.

Exact same thing happened to my 1995 accord: i turn the key, car makes a cranking noise, but never starts. Turns out that my battery terminals (metal piece where red and black wire touches) were cracked, so supposedly not enough electricity was generated to start the car. I jump-started the car for a few minutes until it finally started on its own and i drove it to the nearest auto shop. The battery terminals were replaced for 10 bucks..haven't encountered the problem since.

Your battery could be too weak to turn over your starter. Check also your battery terminals if loose and dirty. heck also your fuel pump if working and also your fuel pump relay. Hope this help!
