Default How do I turn off the engine check light in my 2000 civic?

My engine light came on last night so I just got back from autozone and I had them plug in the thing to tell you why the engine light is on. They said it was a very small/slow leak from the gas cap. I looked at it and sure enough the seal was kinda bent on it, so I got it back in good shape and put it back in. So I was wondering will the light eventually go off because I fixed it? Or is there a way I can turn it off manually? Thanks

take it to a dealer and have it serviced. They will turn it off.

One thing you could try is to disconnect the negative battery cable for about 10 min., then connect it back. Some cars allow you to clear the code that way.If that doesn't work, you could try another autoparts store or a trusted mechanic to reset the code so the light goes off.(some,if not by now all, autoparts stores won't clear the codes for people due to legal reasons). If they can't get the codes cleared for you by trying, there might be something else wrong that needs fixed. If nothing else is wrong, then you might have to have a sergical procedure done to give the dealership a leg to clear the code.

you can turn off the check engine light by taking off the ground from battery but it will reset the ecu as the ecu has memories to all components that it controls

your light will turn off but all memories that are saved in your ecu will also be reset

the only way to do it without resetting the memories in the ecu is using the obd2 scanner to clear the code(s) or i believe you have to do 50 key cycles (turn key to on and off and on and off etc)

the on-board diagnostic system tests for a leaking gas cap after the car has been running for at least 15 minutes at speed after being started with a cold engine. So the test isn't run each and every time you drive the car; generally the test only occurs if the car has been parked all day or overnight and then driven on a freeway.

When the system finds that the gas cap is not leaking on two successive tests it will turn the light out.

otherwise, you can go back to autozone and ask them to shut it off with the scan tool. it won't go out by disconnecting the battery or pulling any fuses.

Autozone could have turned it off for you with their code reader. It should go off by itself within a few days as long as everything is OK.
