Hey,
I have a civic 2000 manual tranny. I seem to be having some issues with the gearbox (I think), When I shift from 1st to 2nd or even 2nd to third, the car makes a bit of rattling/"currr" noise. It rarely happens in 4th/5th gear but every time during 1st/2nd. I took it to a nearby mechanic who told me its just the exhaust shield but I have a hard time believing it. Any experience with such situation is appreciated! Thanks a lot The mechanic did a rushed job looking at it, and the thing is it rattles at idle and mostly during 1st/2nd gear and rarely rattles at 4th/5th so I don't know, it just seems weird because of its inconsistency. |

You took it to a mechanic? And he looked at the car but you don't believe him? So your gonna believe what a bunch of idiots online who can't see the car or hear the noise tell you? It could be a bad transmission or maybe even an exhaust shield rattle? I would think if it was something serious like a bad trans then the mechanic would have told you that since he could make a lot more money fixing bad transmissions than he could fixing exhaust rattles. If you don't trust the guy then take it to another mechanic.

You're right - although rattling converter shields are common on Hondas, I've never heard of one being sensitive to the gear you are shifting into. My guess would be worn bushings in the shift linkage, another common problem. However, if the converter shield has broken loose it may be getting against the shift linkage when you are on the left side of the shifter throw.
BTW - this forum exists and scores successes because mechanics are not always right. In fact, I am still working on my own cars because of mechanics who have been wrong. |
