Default SRS Light on 2002 CRV

I took my CRV to the dealer to TS the SRS light and to see if it is related to the OPDS ext. warranty issue (Spring 2008). I was told by the dealer that they could not trouble shoot the issue as the SRS control unit was not responding and the light, upon re-set, would go back on. The tec. asked me if the battery died recently and I indicated that indeed it did. He indicated that the low battery level could cause the SRS control unit to fail. I called Honda America Service to press the issue and they indicated that there is no tech. bulletin on this issue (low battery causing SRS control unit failure) and that the only way to correct this issue is to pay the $767 to replace the control unit.

This does not seem right that a low battery could cause a safety issue and Honda not step up to cover it. Has anyone had a similar issue and if so what was the experience/solution?
