Default "Hood ROD question"

This isnt stricktly for Hondas.. but you guys seem knowlegdeable about cars...so can I ask it here?
I'm a car noob

lets say if the clip holding the rod brakes and you dont know, then you drive around for months, years and not know that the rod is not secured...

If the rod inside the hood is not secured properly into its clip.....

Can the rod which is not secured cause any damage to your car?
whats the worst that could happen if the rod is not secured?
any serious damage. or will it just make a rattling noise...
just wondering..

thank you
