Default 93 honda accord tranny problem.

I have a 93 accord with an automatic tranny. Ever since I have had it, it has shifted in & out of OD at highway speeds. I've had it for about a year & a half. Yesterday it started something new. Going down a two lane biway about 55 I noticed the D4 light on the dash went out & came back on after a little while. This continued for several miles until I had to stop & found it had not downshifted to low gear. I manually shifted it into 2nd gear & it moved ok, but the D4 light stayed lit at the same time the 2 light was. When I got to my destination I found the D4 light stayed on not matter where I put the selector, even park & reverse. After checking online for possible culprits, I found that the two solenoids on the transaxle might be the problem. New ones are expensive as hell, so I got a couple from a junkyard & installed them to see if that fixed it. The problem remained & now a new problem has started. Now the park safety button on the shifter wont release all the time. It will only release if the D4 light is lit also. I also hear a clicking noise under the console when these lights blink on & off. I dont want to drive it for to long like this. Anybody got any ideas? Can driving it like this cause more damage? I have had to shut it off & start it back up real quick to get the safety lock to release & have been shifting manually, but this is a pain. Help!

Wow! What a response. I'm overwhelmed. Anyway, I discovered today that I also have no first or fourth gear. If this jogs anybodys memory, I could really use the advice. My haynes manual is no help at all with trannys.

Just in case it might help anybody in the future, I fixed it. It was the transmission control module (TCU) located under the passenger side carpet. I installed one from a 91 accord lx. Mine is a 93 ex, so it must not matter what model it is. 7 bolts, 2 plugs, & $36.00 from a junkyard. Works great now!

Hi Dear Redneck

You said;
when U R driving in the highway U R using the Oever Drive;
This down here what U just said :
{{{ Ever since I have had it, it has shifted in & out of OD at highway speeds. }}}.

Which is OK. but when driving in mountainous area
or towing a trailer;
You may need to switch it off when driving in mountainous area
or towing a trailer.

How to use overdrive:
Generally speaking, overdrive (O/D) is the highest gear in the transmission.
On most cars the automatic transmission has 3 speeds and Overdrive (forth speed).
Overdrive allows the engine to have less rpm with higher speed in order to have better fuel efficiency.
When you switch it on, you allow the transmission to shift into overdrive mode after the certain speed is reached (usually 30 - 40 mph depending on the load).
When it's off, you limit transmission shifting by third speed.
In normal driving condition the overdrive should be always on.
You may need to switch it off when driving in mountainous area or towing a trailer.
{{{ The automatic transmission automatically shifts from OD to the 3-th gear when it feel more load.
When it feels less load it shifts back to the O/D, but under certain conditions, e.g.: driving uphill or towing a trailer, the transmission can not decide to stay in OD or to shift into 3-th speed and it starts to shift back and forth.
That's the time you may switch it off and help the transmission to decide.] .
You also may need to switch it off when you want to slowdown using the engine braking,
for example, driving downhill. [For more details, check your owner's manual }}}.

I hope it helps,
Good luck.

Best regards;
Za-Fairi.
