Default Is car in limp mode when engine light comes on?

I had a primary speed sensor problem which I fixed. But I still have Error code 15 and 41 present. The engine light is on. So is the car still running in limp mode?? I'm getting gas mileage around 34mpg on strictly highway driving. I have a 1998 Civic LX automatic.

I'm guessing the car is running a little rich and it's possible the car is probably in some type of limp mode. Anybody know?

well having an automatic is going to give you slightly decreased milage anyway but when you fixed the sensor, did you erase the trouble codes? even when the car is fixed and the trouble codes wernt erased, the check engine ligh will stil be one, the dealership should be able to erase them for you, or you could use one of those fancy scanners and erase it yourself. but to answer your question yes, it is in a sort of limp mode, it will run a littl rich but if you get the codes erased then it should go back to normal.

No, I have not erased the error codes, I still have a primary oxygen sensor heater error and an ignition error (code 41 and 15). I'll reset by removing the fuse in the box by the battery.

Regarding the limp home mode it feels like it runs okay but it could still be in a limp mode? From what I understand Limp mode means the car shifts and runs at a predetermined set of values but that wouldn't necessarily make it noticeable would it?

Also if I reset the computer should the engine light come back on again if the primary oxygen sensor heater problem still exists. Or will the error code register without lighting the engine light?

if you erase the codes and the problem wasnt fixed, the check engine light will come on because the computer senses theres something wrong. but if you've fixed it, then after you reset the trouble codes, the check engine light should stay off. as for the other question, the limp mode to the driver shouldnt be real noticeable if you can even tell at all, modern day engines run pretty smoothly even when something malfunctions.

Thanks. I've been hearing that some cars that go into limp mode run really rough, as for my modern car it's probably running a little rich and I should be able to squeek a few more mpg by fixing the oxy heater sensor and resetting the computer.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to replace the oxygen sensor on the weekend and reset the computer and see what happens. I'll repost back with info.

Okay changed my primary oxygen sensor. Was fairly easy. Reset my engine light and seems to run a little more smoothly. Only time will tell if it really makes a difference on my mileage. Since I had an oxygen sensor heater problem I should get better mileage while the engine is cold with the new sensor, and since it's winter it should make a good difference.

Air filter and spark plugs will make a difference, too. Might not be much, but it's $20 well spent to make sure that fuel is igniting optimally and good air flow is present. If you change an emission sensor, I always change the things contributed to the emissions, which would be the filter and plugs.

Just a thought.

Thanks yes. I had already changed the spark plugs, the air filter, the fuel filter and PCV valve. Also change the Cap and rotor as well. Pretty much everything to do with the fuel exhaust system except the EGR valve and the exhaust manifold.

One thing I did notice is that it looks like someone has welded a crack on the exhaust manifold. So I may, or may not replace it. If it's leaking (I don't think it is but if it is) I may just weld it up myself to completely seal it.
