Default My 98 Honda Civic EX, ran out of gas w/o light coming on & then getting 12 mpg?

My car ran out of gas without the gas light going on and driveing 42 miles on

ten bucks which should be about 100 miles of usage. Everyone said it was

the fuel pump, but when a friend saw the Gas tank it was

empty.????? Now it runs. Why does the car all of a sudden get 12 mpg & the fuel light

blow out at the same time?

Maybe you got a tank full of air & no gas. Thais can happen at a pump. The numbers still roll up but no fuel enters your tank. Try another gas station.

Has the car been checked for fuel leaks? I do not think that that much fuel could be used by the engine in normal driving that you would not notice it running like it wanted revenge on you.

Also, the fuel light may not have showed up because the rate at which it used the fuel was very quick. Many Hondas dampen the fuel gauge (So that when you go up or downhills, the fuel level does not change) I imagine that the fuel light may work that way too.

Change the air AND fuel filter then refill and watch for any leaks. The failing fuel warning light could be just from a short or a faulty fuel level sending unit, and if the fuel level sending unit is going bad that could also be the reason why you think your getting less MPG than you really are since it's misreading what amount is actually in the tank.
