Shop around please...i can't emphasize that enough. Try to avoid going to the dealership they WILL charge an arm and a leg. Look in the phone book and call around first. I

expensive, you would be better off if you know someone who can fix it and save you some money.

Head gasket work is going to be more than 400 hundo at a dealership buddy. To replace a head gasket you gotta remove the intake manifold, exhaust manifold, valve train, and then the head, disconnecting lots of sensors and the ignition system along the way. Then the head needs to be checked to see if it is warped, or cracked, and repaired if necessary.

Here is the problem when getting a estimate for a head gasket. What happened to the car. Why is the head gasket bad. If the car over heated then your looking at warpage and possible cracks. There you get into more money having to machine the head back true (straight). If it is cracked depending on where and how bad some can be fixed but not recommended. It is recommended to replace with new or reman. An independent shop can do the work alot cheaper that a dealer can, because they use different parts, and charge alot less on labor. On this job you are looking in the range of 600-1000.00 at independent and 900-1500 at a dealer. Hope this helps.

That would depend largely on your mechanical skills. The FelPro set for that engine runs around $120, but does not include head bolts that you probably should replace. Add in $50-70 more for fluids, filters, plugs, and assorted small parts since you "might as well fix that" while the motor is apart. A local machine shop charges $75 to mill the head. If that's all the work you need, you're looking at right around $300 by the time you get it all back together.

The possibility exists that the head may need more than simple milling to make it flat, so have your machine shop inspect and give you a $ amount before they do any machining. Frequently, it is cheaper to buy a remanufactured or even a new head than it is to pour money into a head that is severely damaged.

I've owned 6 Ford Escorts, and each of them needed a head gasket at some point. I got to the point that I could change one out in less than 6 hours. I never had the heads machined, and never had a problem with the new gaskets leaking. Just lucky, I guess. YMMV.
