Default Question about my 1997 Honda Civic?

I went to start my '97 Civic and it wouldn't turn over, so, being that it is a 5 spd, i just got it rolling and popped the clutch to get it running.

It was really late, and dark, so i turned on my head lights. I then realized that with the head lights on, my car was running HORRIBLE, it wouldn't even get over like 10-15 MPH's, and it kept popping and making crappy noises.

With the headlights off, it ran fine....

My first thought was the battery/alternator.

The battery was fine, and i still haven't checked the alternator, but the problem has stopped.

I just want to know what your opinion is on the matter.

It's your battery. Have it tested at an autozone. Your car electronics may work, but if your battery won't produce enough CCA(cold cranking amps) you'll have trouble. They will also check your alternator at Autozone or Wal-Mart. One last thing is the tension on your alternator belt.

The battery isn't fine! Your electrical system needs a constant, steady 12V source or the computer will not work right, the coil will make a weak spark etc.

Get your electrical system checked, most shops will do it free. This will pin point the problem before you start throwing money under the hood.I replaced my OEM Battery with a Sears Die Hard "Platinum",upgraded the ignition (Accel HST-2)and swapped to E3 "diamond fire" plugs.Starts no matter what, runs smooth and strong.Gets outrageous mileage (28-32)The battery is an AGM style dry battery.Same technology NASA uses in outer space, makes 880 CCA no matter what. The BATTERY is the entire heart of your electrical system! without it your car is dead or sick. The alternator is just as crucial, without it your battery becomes ballast, check them together.
