Default my 99 civic randomly shuts off while driving?

the radio still works and so do the flashers, but the speedometer, fuel gage, and thermostat all fail . dash lights go off, car will not crank immediately. i know these cars have faulty ignition switches, but that's not the problem. help?

Okay this sounds stupid but. Change your oil!

Seriously it's just your oil that needs to be changed. I'm guessing it's been about 5K miles or so since you last changed your oil, at least. All it's doing is throwing the timing off and causing your engine to essentially stall out. Change your oil and then after a thousand miles change it again and do it with the back tires about 1-2cm off the ground and then put the back end down with the oil pan bolt still removed so that it pushes all the sludge that has built up in your oil pan out. After that keep changing it every 3 thousand miles and don't wave from that. honda's will last forever if you do your maintenance properly. But if you don't they are very fickle and will build up sludge quick.

If I might ask, how is it that you know the problem isn't with the ignition switch? Honda has a recall for the replacement of the ignition switches on that year car. the ignition switch is the electrical switch that is on the back of the key cylinder where you put the key in and turn it. the switch has electrical contacts that burn out and cause the car to stall while driving. when that happens you lose the ignition and all the things shut down as though you turned the key OFF. the problem is not with the circuit that powers the lights but with the "Run" position of the switch. the car usually start after the car coasts to the side of the road. depending on the condition of the contacts, it may crank but not start immediatly.

even if the switch was replaced before, I strongly suspect that is your problem. I have seen failures of new switches that were replaced under the recall.

the other possibility is with the distributor sub assembly that includes the ignition module. if the condition only happens when hot then that transistorized module may be going open circuit. when that happens you'll lose spark and the engine will stall. the reason I would eliminate that is that you note "the car will not crank immediately". if the ignition module or coil were responsible the car would crank but not fire up. the ignition switch could result in a 'no crank' condition.

hope that helps

Default Re: my 99 civic randomly shuts off while driving?

My honda stalls out to and i still dont know exactly why it does it. i replaced the ignition switch and it will still do the same. i found out when i wiggle and mess with the fuse box it would get a connection to the main relay and the car would turn on. what wires do you guys think i need to replace? cause sometimes when i dont hear the main relay click, i wiggle it and if im lucky the connection to the relay will stay on and i can turn the car on, but most of the time the connection will only hold a milli-secound and i can neva get the car to start. I REALLY NEED HELP ASAP. Please. Could it in any way be the ECU?

Replaced:Ignition Switch, distributor coil, main relay(Used, have 2)
