How much should I expect to spend?

there are tons of honda engines out there for cheap i would look for a engine before i look for a new car

Often it is other things that have problems for that generation of Accord. However, if the rest of the is running like a Swiss watch, invest the money into it. It will probably give you years more of fairly reliable motoring.

I am curious - what happened to the engine? It is usually good for 200-300K miles unless something unusual goes wrong. Running badly does not mean a bad engine.
