I have a 1998 Honda Accord, I'm in the process of repairing from a fender and absent mindedly put in standard (non-Honda) power steering fluid into the reservoir. Is this a big mistake or should I drain and refill with Honda power steering fluid? I haven't driven the car, so now is the time to do something.

Big mistake - drain it now. Honda vehicles accept only Honda-compatible power steering fluid. Ordinary types will eat the seals. If you have already run it by now flush the system. The easiest way is to remove the belt, remove the return hose at the pump and put it in a jar, plug the open port with a shop cloth, and turn the pulley CCW by hand while keeping the reservoir topped. When clean fluid comes out the system is flushed.
Genuine Honda fluid is best, but many stores carry Honda-compatible fluid. It will say so on the label, usully on the front. |
