Auto?... Not Too Much To Work With But, As Far As Bolt-Ons I'll Start From Lowest Cost: Cone Air Filter; Muffler; CatBack Exhaust; Headers; Nitrous (Out There But Just Saying); SuperCharger (Decreases The Life Of Engine); TurboCharger (Very Expensive To Maintain)... Have Fun.

cost effectiveness: forget turbos and superchargers, too pricey and u have an automatic.
short ram intake (feel low end torque more) (www.autopartswarehouse.com) underdrive pulley: unorthodox racing, google it. these will get u started. now join a club to get serious: www.honda-acura.net |

1999? Rebuild the engine. If ya know someone it should cost ya around 2g's. Cold air intake change plugs wires and all that...stay away from the fart cans unless you're going full exhaust... that wil just make people laugh at you

Assuming you want to keep the same motor, here are some quick ideas:
1. Avoid driving like a ricer and avoid any stickers, body kits, or POS spoilers. 2. The 3 basic bolt-ons: Cold or Short-Ram Intake, Headers, FULL cat-back exhaust system (Not just a muffler). 3. Auto to Manual conversion 4. Remove any pointless weight (For example: The useless giant piece of wood in the trunk covering the spare tire) 5. Get aftermarket rims/wheels. 6. Install Stage I or II Clutch Kit along with 9lb-12lb streetlight flywheel (If you did manual conversion). 7. Install aftermarket suspension kit for improved handling 8. Install stiffer shifter bushings (Manual only) 9. Upgrade stock Intake Manifold and Throttle Body to aftermarket performance parts. 10. Upgrade camshaft to an aftermarket cam with bigger lobes along with valves and valve springs. 11. Upgrade cam gears. 12. Upgrade ignition system 13. Rebuild motor internals (Esp. if going turbo) 14. Install turbo kit 15. Upgrade ECU to run with turbo 16. Upgrade fuel system for turbo 17. Get car tuned (If it was done before a turbo upgrade, tune it again) Option 2: Do a full engine & transmission swap and while doing this do a auto to manual conversion. Then continue to build. There's all kinds of things you can do, you'll have to research more. |

it depends on what you want to spend..
i'll put it this way.... everyone is talking about turbos and this n that.. for a turbo, you're going to expect to pay 7-10k to install one.... i doubt you'll be installing it yourself, so., you have to pay someone to do it... plus the parts themselves.... is it worth 10,000 to get maybe an extra 50 to 100 horsepower in a car that is not designed to have that much power in it? if you have that kind of power in that tiny car you WILL need to do a LOT of suspension work. thats more thousands... the cheapest way to get horsepower is to put a new exhaust system on it.... headers, all the way to the Fart Pipe. that will cost you about 800 to 1000 to have done total then put a cold air intake on it.... you can do that yourself, but it'll cost a few hundred for a good setup... then have the ECU tuned for more power... that could cost you a minimum of 500, up to 1200 depending on who you get to do it for you. you get what you pay for.... if some "bubba" says "i'll do it fo 200 bucks" you should bet that you'll be taking your car to the dealership on the back of a tow truck and replacing the computer in a few months.... their -not- cheap.......... in all, REALISTICALLY if you get a turbo, and the exhaust, and the intake, and the ECU reprogrammed and the suspension you'll need, and the transmission upgrades you'll need and all of that, and spend the 40,000 it could potentially cost to GAIN that extra 100 horsepower, You could have bought a 2007 corvette...... or.. you can sell your car, and buy a 2002 camaro for like $6000 which has about 4x the power of what you have now, and still gets close to 30mpg. what i always tell my friends is, if you want a car that goes fast.... buy a car that goes fast... don't waste a bunch of money turning a yugo into a ferrari............ it's not meant to be one... start with a good platform and go from there.. i know you aren't trying to race it.. but... deal with what you got... if you don't like it, sell it and buy something better.. then soup that up if you need to. it's 100% guaranteed that ANYTHING you do to make that car faster will only make it harder to sell, and will actually take away from resale value.... you are 100% guaranteed to lose 100% of the investment you made making that car faster when you decide to sell it. 5-7000 $ turbo? great... it may add an extra $600 to the car.. if you're lucky... especially if it's used... since turbo's tend to go bad if the owner doesn't know how to maintain them properly. (most people don't) |
