I have Haynes Manual, I need to replace the alternator. It looks like the Axle needs to be removed, I have unbolted the strut from the swing arm, but i can't figure out how to get the axle out of the hub. Please help!
OK, thanks for the reply! That makes sense, I appreciate it. Now that i removed the axle, is there any new parts like a new snap ring or anything that is needed to reinstall it? Or do you just pop it back onto the stub at tranny? |

remove big nut [it is staked] that hold the axle to the hub. us a 31mm-32mm socket and breaker bar. pry the axle from the tranny w/ big screw driver. w/ a punch and small sledge hammer, drive the axle out [backwards] out of the hub. do not damage the threads. if you want to remove/change the axle completely, then you must remove the bolt that connects the fork to the lower control arm because the head of the shaft cannot pass through the fork. get hold of me at bv0175 at yahoo and i can give you more help.

Since the axle is out now, you have the option of replacing the axle seal in the transmission, it's not necessary but can be done if the seal is leaking. Otherwise you can put the axle back in, some people grease it up a little before putting it into the tranny and some don't, I don't, but it's your choice. Be very careful not to break the axle and don't push it in from the opposite end or the joints could break. Just crawl under there and get a good grip on the transmission end and push it in just make sure it seats all the way in. If you get it in and it doesn't feel right then it probably isn't. Here's a guide I followed when I did my first axle: http://www.ht-archive.com/showthread.php?t=382416 Step 15 sounds like where your at. Good luck with the rest of it. |

I hate to mention this when you are this far along, but the axle does not have to be removed. If you remove the air cleaner box and twist the alternator every which way it will come out. A genuine pain, but not as hard as removing the axle every time.
