Every car has gears such as 1st, 2ed ect, even automatic. With manual (stick) the person in the one doing the shifting instead of the car. The number of gears determines how fast the car can go overall. 6th is for a higher speed than 5 as 4th is for a lower speed than 5th. It's not that it makes it faster or slower. It just means that the car is able to reach a higher over all speed. 4th is for a lower speed than 5th and 6th is faster than both.

Higher amount of gears allows you to stay in the best power range, speeding acceleration, but makes you shift more, slowing acceleration.
Fewer gears means you must start further away from the optimum power range, and go further past it, etc. Generally more gears are (considered) faster. Though I think 6 speed is about the cutoff. after that you are shifting too often. (this does not count for auto trannys, as they seem to be getting more and more gears, mercedes has an 8 speed auto) |

yes, but however its more to do with the gear ratio of the gearbox. rally cars such as evo's and subaru's are geared for acceleration, so have short gears and quick shifts. 6 speed usually means better top end, but not nessecerilly better acceleration as the ratio's on a 6 speed box will be closer than that of a 5 speed, (shorter gears). for example my friends punto sporting has 6 gears, but he has to change into 2nd at about 25ish mph, whereas i can go to 38 mph before i have to. 6 gears just give you more ability to stay in the otimum rpm range, but overall its more to do with the specific car and gearbox
