A standard front wheel drive offset is basically flush with the outside of the wheel, so your problem is going to be how far they stick in, not how far they stick out. With a width like that it's possible that the wheel will contact the strut. To solve that problem you need to get a different offset. A standard offset for a front wheel drive is about +30 to +40-ish. As this number gets lower (eg +20), the further your wheels are going to stick out, but the further away they get from the strut. You need to find a balance (although I'm not sure if you'll need to. A lot of manufacturers now build their cars with rims in mind, so 8.5 might fit in there).
