Default How effective are Honda CR-Vs in Midwest winters?

I'm looking into buying something that would get around in the winters better. There are many hills in my area, and the Civic just doesn't cut it.

I will be getting a used one. What year would be a good one? All of these CR-Vs hold their value well. I think the cheapest I have seen is like $7,000.

Is "REALTIME 4WD" a joke?

it says in the manual that this vehicle was not intended for off-road use. if winter conditions are off-road-ish, it might be a bad idea to get a CR-V.

Realtime 4WD just means that the 4WD only kicks in when the front wheels start slipping. in usual urban conditions, it's never used.

I suggest you try looking for a Subaru Forester instead, or an Impreza.

The realtime 4WD system really is a joke. First of all, it doesn't engage until the front wheels start slipping - so youre already basically out of luck by the time it does engage. Second of all, it's only capable of transferring some abysmally small amount of power to the rear wheels. If you look around on YouTube you'll find test videos where the engineers have the CR-V on a mild slope (something like 5 degrees) and take traction away from the front wheels and see if the rear wheels will power it up the slope. For the Honda AWD/4WD system it is almost never capable.

With the Honda realtime 4WD system you're basically paying extra money to add unnecessary weight to your vehicle.

Do the right thing and get a Subaru. They unquestionably have the best AWD system on the market.
