Default Accord 1999 RPM doesn't go till 6200 when in "P" or "N" gear.?

I have honda 1999 V4 automatic transmission. When I press the accelerator in "P" or "N" gear, its engine doesn't go above 5200 RPM. However, I believe it should have gone up till the maximum RPM supported. Does anyone knows why is it doing so?

I do realize that it is bad to rev up the engine while in P or N gear. But my idea was that it should still go up to 6500 RPM. Also, while in P or N, my car starts to loose power at around 5200 RPM. However, it runs fine while in D4. I have test drive it till 105 MPH, and it still runs great. I actually bought it last month, and it has 121k miles on it. It really is a good car.

That isn't "maximum rpm supported".

It's simply maximum RPM before imminent danger. But even below that, can still be destructive to your car, over time.

5200 is more than plenty, there is absolutely 100% NO reason to need to take it higher than that.

Yup!

You are hitting what is called the rev limiter. The reason your RPM's won't go past this is because of a lack of air in the air intake (as you drive air is being forced into the intake, when you don't move no air gets forced in there). The ECM/ECU can sense this and adjust to counter act this, as a result of the "adjustment" the rev limiter kicks in to not allow you to blow your engine.

Just one question though, why rev your engine in park or neutral...? It's an in-line 4 cyl...
