Default is it safe to change the transmission fluid of a 2002 honda accord with 107000 miles?

i have a 2002 honda accord which has 107000 miles on it. i have never changed the trans fluid before but i have always topped it off when it is low though it doesn't get low a lot. i have topped it maybe a couple of times since i bought it. the trans fluid now looks dark and slightly smelly and i would like to drain it out and change it but some people say its okay while some are telling me that doing so will damage the transmission. i already messed up by not changing it for so long and i don't want to mess up again by using it till i damage the trans. it is not slipping or anything like that to the best of my knowledge and i just drove it to canada from chicago and back without any problems. please advise on what to do. If i can change it does it have a filter and should i change that too?

Of course it's safe to change the fluid? How could it not be?

Just do it,all it takes is 3 quarts of Honda ATF,no filter accessible for normal maintenance.Should do it more often to protect the life of it.

you are lucky your transmission made it that far, especially on those model accord, 98-02. 4cyl is really easy, drain and fill (yellow dipstick)with 2.5 honda atf and ONLY honda atf. v6 use bout 3qt and fill plug (17mm) is on top of transmission. If I were you, i'll get at least 6qts, drain fill, drive for a lil' bit and do it again to flush it out. Don't let shops use their machine to do it, Honda does not recommend that at all. our methods at the shop to flush is drain, fill, drive, repeat. don't dump 6qts in there at once of course.
