Hi, I recently started having a problem with my engine shutting down on my 92 lude Si, its got about 220000 miles on the body but the engine was rebuilt due to accident. It first happened a week ago right after I filled up gas, I went to turn the ignition and it just died, not cranking, no sound, just completely shutdown, and the lights wouldn't turn on or anything. As if battery was completely dead. My buddy jumped me and I was good to go. Couple days later, it shut down on my while i was driving, I think I was in second gear slowly accelerating, and I couldn't crank it over for a few minutes. Then it was fine. Then next day same problem, much more frequent, every 10 to 15 minutes it would shut down while driving and the check engine light comes on and shuts off. It would crank but not start until a few times cranking and hitting gas, and once it starts, check engine light dissappears until it shuts down again. Any suggestions? I am going to clean battery terminals, check voltage on the battery, voltage on alternator. Any help would be great! Thanks!

due a load test on the complete starting and charging system you can get all the readings you need in spec unless you test it with a load auto zone does it for free.me myself went and paid a good chunk for a variable load tester and trust me its paid itself by not buying new batterries to find the alt. junk vice versa hope i help and other then that check really good all your ground.main ground and all the ground straps for a loose groound that may be intermittenly loose or unstable any way i have to figuire how i blew up my oil pump myself goodluck to ya

First check the Ignition switch! Check with Honda-I think there was a recall for it........... The car may turn over just fine, and even fire up, but only until you let go of the key. If it's doing this, the ignition switch is either worn out or defective.

Ok, sorry for taking so long to reply, I have replace my batter terminals because they were badly corroded, and I have gotten my battery and alternator tested at advanced auto parts, and both are fine. Now when the vehicle stalls, the power doesn't shut off, just dies and check engine light comes on and it takes a few cranks with me furiously hitting the gas simultaneously, are these signs of fuel pump to injectors?

From the symtoms you describe my bet is the ignition switch. there are a couple of sets of contacts in the switch--one for "start" (when you turn the key, the starter motor turns over) and one for "run" (when you let go of the key, the starter turns off and the motor "runs". Two different circuits. Same thing happened on my 96 lude and my daughter's 98 civic.
You could spend a bunch of dough on replacing parts if you want, or take your car to someone who knows Honda. Money well spent in this case I think. Hope this helps. |
