the answer lies in the ignition coil. the ignition coil builds and discharges the current of electricity to fire the spark plugs. Your tachometer is reading the number of times the coil discharges and converts that into engine RPM.
if the coil is breaking down internally then the signal to the tachometer is erratic and the needle starts to jump. its a sign that the coil is about to fail. When that happens it will start as an engine misfire and lead to stalling and quickly to a no start. replace the ignition coil and your tachometer should work properly. hope that helps |
