That's not a bad price, but if you want to try to go lower simply say that you'll pay something else. They probably won't except the offer, but the may counter offer someting in between the original price and your offer.

By going on http://www.kbb.com or http://www.edmunds.com. This gives you the actual price at the dealers that you should pay for this car. It also depends on all the features or what model it is. It would be difficult to negotiate on a certified car. It has already been through all of the inspections and has everything up to date. Nothing needs to be repaired on this vehicle at this time. You can only go to these websites to make sure that you are buying it at the correct selling price.

Do some research in the newspaper and online, because you need some basis for negotiating. Though not an exceptional deal, 17,000 from a dealer, if it is in very good condition and depending on equipment, seems O.K. Through a private seller you should be able to get a comparable car for 15,000 to 16,000. And this might be your bargaining point. Going through a dealer has its benefits which the dealer is well aware. You are paying for a little bit of protection should the car have a hidden defect. You are also paying for additional dealer overhead.
A few times, I have picked out a car, brought in cash for less than the asking price, with the claim that this is my budget, and then I'm prepared to walk away. On my last used car purchase (I've never owned a new car), the salesman called me back as I was leaving, and settled for a lower price after he made the claim that he was already at rock bottom. The sticker price always has negotiating margin. There of course are many online resources like the one below. www.cars.com |
