Default What would be the benefits (risks) of putting an lighter underdrive pulley on my car?

My friend put one on his 1991 Nissan Maxima and it felt like it revved up quicker and I was thinking about putting one on my 1993 Honda Civic, would there be any longterm risks associated with this upgrade?

from what i have heard from al my buddies (most drive hondas) the under drive pulley kit will give you a very good power gain. there shouldnt be any risks. just keep an eye on your fluids (oil and coolant). a friend of mine has one in his 94 civic hatch, which still has the stock motor, and he got a 20 horse power gain. for a stock D series engine, that car is pretty quick.

consider this, if it was completely free power, then every car manufacturer would be using a smaller pully out of the factory. It's the size it is because that's the size it needs to be to properly opperate all the accessories. Underdriving all your pumps and Alternator in city driving or long highway driving when your in overdrive can cause a drain on the battery and pumps. The pumps provide less assistance in terms of steering and oil and coolant is moved with less pressure under low rpms. the idea of an underpully was for the guys who would race old stock cars. They were driving around at 5 and 6 grand all the time and the alternator and pumps couldn't handel that all the time. They are designed to work most efficiently within a "normal" rpm range. When you underdrive your system it's suppose to let your belt driven accessories run at normal rpms while your engine runs at higher rpms. if your city driving, it's not what an underdrive pully was designed for.

again, if it was the BEST thing for the car then all the cars would have them on right out of the box.
