Last night i was driving my accord, and it shut off for no reason. i was in gear driving on the street and the engine just shut off and the check engine light came on. i pulled over and let it sit for a bit. then it fired right up and the check engine light went away. about 15 minutes later, while at a stop light it shut off again. once again i let it sit for a bit and it fired right up. when it has shut off, a weird clicking sound comes from under the dash. a friend guessed it may be the main relay going out. can any one give me a better idea of what may need to be fixed?

Take it to a shop and have a free charging system checked on it.It may be a coil heating up and shorting out with in that time frame of starting it up.The heat may be causing the coil to short out.The shop could tell you what is going on with it and find the problem to fix it.hgm20002000@yahoo.com

the cause of your problem is usually that the contacts in the ignition switch are burnt. Honda has a recall on all 1997-1999 Accords (and other models) for stalling due to a defective ignition switch. The ignition switch is the electrical switch on the back of the key cylinder that you put the ignition key into and turn to start the car. when that switch burns the contacts it breaks the flow of electricity to the ignition system of the engine and the car stalls. the stalling usually occurs when driving down the highway or coming to a stop. the car usually restarts with little problem. these conditions match your problem.
If the recall has not been performed, take the car to any Honda dealer and they will replace the ignition switch at no charge regardless of the mileage on the vehicle. you can call any honda dealer and ask them to check to see if the recall was done before going there. to do that, you will have to give them the vehicle identification number of your car. that can be found on your vehicle registration. there are other things that can cause the condittion but the ignition switch recall is the most likely. Honda does have an extended warranty in the US for the 1997 model years that covers emission related parts up to 150,000 miles. if it is not the ignition switch there is a chance that it could be one of the other covered items and I would recommend taking the car to a Honda dealer if you have under 150,000 miles on the car and it is in the US hope that helps |
