Default Question ONLY for people who are good at driving and racing manual cars: How to downshift w/o car

jerking? Got an 99 integra GSR. When im on the highway in 5th gear and i go to downshift to 3rd there is always a huge jerk. This makes me paranoid everytime I do it because i feel as though im probably doing some damage to the tranny and/or the motor.

So, how do I down shift into third from 5th gear smoothly? Say if im doing 65 MPH on the highway and want to push it hard to get quick aceleration do I push in the clutch--put it in 3rd--thenpop the clutch out QUICKLY??? Also, do i keep my foot on the gas the ENTIRE time? Would this prevent the big jerk?

I know when i go to upshift through the gears even at higher RPM I still gotta let off the clutch slowly and smoothly, but to downshift from high RPM are you suppose to pop it out quiclkly? I see videos on youtube of people racing eachother from like 60 MPH rolls and it doesnt appear that their cars jerk when they go to gun it.

Please explain to me in detail the process of doing this without jerking the car so I dont ruin my transmission. Serious answers only, thanks.

65mph might be beyond the capability of the car in 3rd gear. 3rd might be too short for you to even do this.

To ensure smooth gear changes, then ideally you should be shifting at the top of the torque curve. However, the actual map for power, torque and rev range, changes for each and every gear.

There are a lot of questions such as gear and diff ratios that you haven't provided, and there is the question of how many plates are in the clutch and the degree of slip in the clutch plates and the diff.

The only thing I could say that might help would be to clutch on and clutch off between gears, but that isn't the fastest way to change.

Ideally the fastest changes are done without depressing the clutch pedal and sliding through the gear lever when the box and the prop shafts are synched.

u wll ruin the transmission if u downshift from 5th to 3rd once it's over 55 mph and it will jerk , unless u have a different transmission with different gear shifting ratio but even that it will jerk

it will ruin the trany when you shift down from 5th to 3rd it would be better if u double clutch when ur shifting down but from 5th to 4th to 3rd or you can heal toe if u know what dat means but u would still have to go in order to shift to 3rd

It's called rev matching...Just give it gas between shits

So lets say you're at 2500RPM in 5th...

Push the clutch in, rev the engine to around 5000RPM, shift to 3rd, release clutch pedal.

Pretty easy..

how about using forth gear !!! its gonna jerk when you go from 5th to 3rd because of the engine rpm change all of a sudden.
