Default 1998 integra GSR 5-speed: Are bolt on mods just a waste of money? What can I do to improve

performance? If im complaining about spending $800+ on mods, I think a "faster, better" car would be out of my price range.

I hear that the intake header exhaust upgrades usually yield about 4-8 hp gains tops. This doesnt seem worth the money that big name bolt on mods cost (upwards of over $800 total for all 3--intake/header/exhaust).

Im already going to be upgrading my suspension with new springs, shocks, camber kit, etc. But what can i do for the motor? I really dont want to turbo or supercharge it as it is my daily driver and i couldnt afford to have the motor blow...i also couldnt afford to rebuild the internals for a correct turbo setup anyways.

So, what are my options to increase performance with the motor? It already feels peppy and its pretty fun to drive. I am considering getting just a good exhaust for the sound. Should i just leave everything stock? I dont want to spend tons of money on bolt-ons that may give me 5 hp. Serious suggestions please thanks.

Think about how much you are going to spend on this car max. Then think about how much money you could sell the car for.

Maybe you'd be better off with buying a better, faster car.

That is just the reality of modding a 4 cylinder car. You will spend a lot of money to get a little power. That is why it makes more sense to buy something with a V8. For example, you can buy an 87-93 Ford Mustang GT for about $5000. Stock they come with 225 horsepower and 300 ft/lbs of torque. So by just selling your car and buying a 87-93 Mustang you already have a way faster car than what you already had. Spend $2000 in bolt on modifications and you will have about a 300 horsepower 350 ft/lbs torque car that is reliable and cheap. No car ever made has as much performance parts support as this one.

You will not be able to make any decent power out of a 4 cylinder without a turbocharger or a supercharger

Keep in mind that a 98 Integra GSR only makes 170 horsepower and 128 ftlbs of torque. You will spend several thousand dollars on any tuner car to make it quick.

Modding requires lots of money

forget a mustang or any of those s american gas guzzling piece of junks. ive seen many times hondas whoopin up on V8s all day long on the track and the street. dont listen to these guys. if you TRULY want more power out of that motor, turbo charge it. you will have to build the motor to handle the high pressure of the forced induction, but you will be REALLY happy with cars performance. simple bolt ons like a header, exhuast, intake wont really do anything to make your car faster. they are good infact when you have upgraded and modified your cars engine. suspension is a very good idea also. being able to out handle someone on the turns.

regardless of what these V8 cavemen say, u can make a 4 banger even faster then a V8. ever heard of an Evo or STi? both are turbo charged 4 cylinder engines. Go the the 1/4 track and ull see fully built civics and integras walkin camaros and mustangs. any car that is stock, will be pretty slow. once u put some work in an engine and learn how to drive it, ull be walkin anyone that steps up.

Yeah doooood you can definitlymake it faster yo.

First ad a huge 3 foot wing (and make sure its carbon fiber because it adds 10 hp).

Then get a cheap inexpensive 6 inch exhaust from autozone.

Make sure when you install it, that it makes a really loug BUUUURRRRRRR sound......if it doesnt then return and look for a bigger one. 20 hp there for sure.

Oh yeah, slap some flowmasters and "super charged" emblems, they will make people scared and not want to race you.

well most people are morons as you can probably read. Now to answer your question, Bolt-on parts will give you some power, but their real benefit is making the power you have more useable. If you get a good, NO KNOCK OFF, Intake (AEM), Exhaust (Greddy, Invidia, Buddy Club), and header (DC Sports, Greddy) you will only gain 8-12 more HP and 5-10 ft lbs of torque. Now but if you were to dyno the car back to back after putting them on you would see the curve smooth itself out, and you will have probably 10-20 more HP in ranges where you did not have it before. People get so stuck on PEAK numbers that they fail to see the entire picture. Sure you may only gain 15 PEAK hp at 6,500 RPM, but down in the 2,000-3,500 rpm range you may gain 20-25 hp at the same point on the curve. This is what makes your car faster, not the peak HP number. Not only that but the throttle response will be alot better, along with the actual feel of the car.

I'd chip it if I were you, I think you will get the most power out of that. and to the guy with the civic, fully modded civics BARELY keep up with stock muscle cars. I got my 1999 mustang gt with 260 hp, 300 ft/lbs torque for $4,500 and its a lot of fun. whatever you do, don't put a big wing on it, or a huge exhaust tip, or stickers, or a body kit, or neon lights.

Unfortunatly, most of the posters here are wrong, wrong, wrong. Heres the deal. You can gain 20 horsepower from just changing your exhaust diamater and intake but while you gain lots of power at 6000 rpm, you will have less power than you did stock in the low range 2000 to 4000. Your giving up low end power to gain high end power and is the same as a dirt bike or anything else. If you dont believe me google team integra and this can be explained. I Have an integra with 2.5 inch exhaust and weapon r intake, headers ect.
yes I lost horsepower on low range but it still gets around fine. It is faster for racing people now, and it sounds much better. Brand name for exhaust isnt nearly as important as the diamiter and material of the tubeing, go stainless and make sure you get headers or you wont notice any difference.

You should be looking for dyno comparisons before and after exhaust, you dont want to go too big on your exhaust diamiter, for most people 2.25 inch is best but if you race alot and dont need your bottom end range, go 2.5, your car WILL feel slower at low rpms and faster at clost to redline because you have much less back pressure.
