Default Every once in a while I get a whiff of what smells like hydraulic fluid coming from the

car. What is it? Could it be coming from the clutch? My car is a 1995 Honda Accord, standard transmission, 4 cylinder. I've had clutch work done on my car in the past and have never been completely satisfied with the results. If it is not this, what could it be?

more likely than not you have a leak. its hard to tell by smell what is leaking.

if you had a loss of fluid from the clutch then the chances are the pedal would be soft and slow to disengage or engage the clutch. typically, that results in a gear clash. if the clutch feels normal then chances are its not the cltuch fluid.

obviously the first thing to do is to check all of your fluid levels. the clutch master cylinder ls located below and to the left of the brake master cylinder inside the engine compartment on the driver's side. check the fluid level by looking at the mark on the side of the translucent reservoir. salve with the brake fluid level. you can check the fluid level for the engine oil, power steering and coolant as well.

then look for signs of leaks. typically if you smell the fluid then its burning. look for dark spots on the exhaust pipe where oll can leak down onto and burn off of. typically the burning oil comes from a valve cover but on a 12 year old car it can come from anywhere.

hope that helps
