Default 89 civic stalls

I have a 1989 Honda civic lx automatic 176k. In Georgia. From a cold start, the car always starts the first time but if I let my foot off the accelerator it will go dead. It is then hard to start. It will crank and crank until finally it starts up. Until, I get the car out on an open stretch of road for a mile or so, it will continue to stall on me at stop signs and lights. Also, the idle is very rough. The engine shakes and the steering wheel shakes. If I put the car into neutral or park(once warmed up) while at a red light it idles ok. As long as the car is moving a d getting gas, it seems ok. Recent work: new fan motor(was overheating), air and fuel filter, plugs and wires, distributor, new o2 sensor(to pass emissions). Thank you for any input. Bonny
