Default 1984 civic hatchback problems

all right, just registered a couple of minutes ago since i need some help with my broken down civic. its my first car and i might have to sell it (no joke, I'm gonna gry some man tears if i have to). so it was running pretty good until one night when it just decided to overheat and its been sitting there ever since. i checked the hoses that go from the radiator to the engine and there was nothing in there, my dad says it might be the water pump. and now heres the kicker, i don't know jack squat about engines or working on them. a thousand thanks to anyone who can help me out, and remember if you give me a step by step i won't be offended if you write it like you're talking to a retarded two year old. once again many thanks
