Default Honda Pilot with about 235,000 miles, repairs?

At that many miles, what are the things that will probably need to be replaced? I know the timing belt needs to be replaced. My grandpa isn't a mechanic but he knows how to do just about anything with the older cars that didn't have computers. Would you think it would be possible for him to replace those certain parts, he has a LOT of tools. Or would I HAVE to go to a mechanic? And how much do you think it would cost for me to go to a mechanic and for my grandpa to do it?

First off leave that one for Honda technician with a drive train out of a crashed Pilot. Please do not buy something that near the end of it's lifetime. If even the simpleist thing bursts breaks leaks and you over heat it just once there will not be any rebuildable parts left. I know it seems as if cars last forever but all things wear out.

John Paul is right.First have the timing belt replaced my Honda. Please leave that for the Honda people... they know thier business. Plus if they do it it is under their warranty. What is the year though? If they are highway miles? It makes a huge difference.Have a HONDA service person look it over.... it's worth the $$$Cuz Honda is a good product!

I have owned many many Honda vehicles and have had many timing belts replaced. I have never and will never pay dealer prices to have a timing belt replaced. There are plenty of independent mechanics that can do the job. It may be better to use someone that is familiar with Honda but that should not be a problem. You will pay almost half of what a dealer would charge. If your grandfather is mechanically inclined he could probably do it himself. Ask him. I don't consider myself up to the task only because I don't have the patience for the task. I have replaced a timing belt once on a 1974 Fiat 124 sedan that I owned but that is the only time and I didn't have a problem doing it. There was more room under the hood of the Fiat because the motor was not mounted transversely.Get a repair manual and see what is involved and then he may be better able to judge whether he can do it or not. I'm sure he would have no problem with brakes and other such things. If something goes wrong with the computer end of it, well that is a bit rare.. cross that bridge when you come to it. I don't know how old your grandfather is but I am 62 and do most of my own work. However, recently the alternator went in our 02 CR-V and I didn't like the looks of tackling that problem [had to remove the power steering pump and radiator fan just to get to the alternator and get it out]. Local mechanics wanted $150 to $250 for the labor to replace it. I got a 28 year old neighbor to do it for $100.A mechanic will charge around $350 to replace a timing belt [although that may not include all the parts I've listed below] and the dealer will charge close to double that or more. If grandpa can do it the parts should be around $160 and should include the belt, tensioner and idler which at that mileage would be a good idea to replace. The water pump [& gasket] if driven by the belt is another $54 and the drive belt is another $10. So all total parts could be $160.http://www.drivewire.com/products/ho...t-kit/6050/You didn't say what year so all the links I posted are for a 2003 model.
