88 accord issues
So I'll try to lay this out as best as I can, seeing as how I don't know a whole bunch about cars.
Yesterday I changed the oil on my 1988 accord lxi. While I was at it, I checked the fluid in my radiator as well. It was low, so I put water in it (didn't have any anti-freeze). I also poured some water in the reserve tank. For some reason my reserve tank is really low, so you can't actually see it. Well a couple hours later I was driving and after about 25 minutes of being in stop and go traffic and it was pretty hot outside, I noticed white smoke coming out of the tail pipe. So I pulled off the highway parked and took a look. It stopped smoking, but my father-in-law told me to put some anti-freeze in it, cuz the water was already pretty low again. I poured it into the reserve tank, and noticed that when I was pouring it, it was coming out from beneath somewhere as fast as I was pouring it in. We waited a little while longer to let it cool down, then started driving again. After about 10 minutes on the highway it all of a sudden had A LOT of smoke coming out for about 5 seconds, then it completely stopped again. It happened one more time when getting off the highway. We parked it for a few hours, then drove home. It didn't do it again. I did not lose any power or anything, the car was running perfectly fine.
One thing to note is that the temperature gauge in the dash hasn't worked since I bought the car. I was thinking that maybe there's a leak somewhere in the reserve, so the previous owner maybe disconnected the temperature gauge or something? Or could it be a blown head gasket? Cuz it hasn't done it since, and it has never done anything before I put water in the reseve/radiator and anti-freeze in both as well. Thanks for any help, I appreciate it!
