Default Repaired a recalled Honda Accord part with my own money?

My windshield wiper motor on my 2003 Honda Accord was broken and so I took it in to my local mechanic last week to get the darn thing fixed. After doing some research AFTER the repair (yes, stupid me...), I found out that there had been a safety recall for this exact part/problem in April of 2008. I was out of the country for all of last year and so I unfortunately didn't receive the letter from Honda. Excuses, excuses, excuses...Am I completely out of luck in this situation to get any reimbursement from Honda for getting this part fixed on my own? Granted it was only $70 parts/labor but I sure would have liked to spend that money on something else...Thanks for your assistance!

Don't send it to Honda take it to the Dealer, the receipt for the repair with the car and the notice they will issue you a refund on the spot.

You can try seeing if Honda will pay for your repair (I think it's less than what they would charge), but they very well might not pay. I had the recall repair done on my Accord and they put some cover over the wiper motor. If your mechanic didn't do that, Honda might be able to do that for free. Call around and see what they will do.

In order for the recall to be covered by honda it needs to be performed at a Honda dealership. All Honda's have a database that can look up outstanding recalls on any Honda vehicle using the VIN number, you could try contacting Honda directly but chances are because you took it to an outside mechanic and not a dealer they won't reimburse you.
