vtec engines are very good. The maf is a mass airflow sensor and it tells your ecu how much air the engine is getting. im no expert or anything but find yourself a good honda forum. those guys know everything there is to know about vtec. all i know is that they have a ton of potential, not to mention the power they already have stock.

stock vtec motors aren't bad. but they are not as impressive unless you build them or mod them with performance parts. buy a turbo and put it on the car. it will be alot faster. check out http://www.ilovebodykits.com. they have tons of performance stuff for civics.

The 2001 Civic ex has a D17A2 (127hp@6300rpm 114tq@4800rpm), it is by no means fast but it's not a complete dog either, it's peppy enough for a fun drive when you want it. MAF sensor measures the air coming into the engine...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_flow_sensor
