Well there are 3 main types of headlights.1. Halogen Reflectors2. Halogen Projectors3. HID ProjectorsHalogen Reflectors were the most common type of headlights. They were basically a headlight with a reflector behind it and the light would shine off the reflectors and provide light infront of you. These were very common in most basic cars prior to about 2002ish.http://images.paultan.org/images/Toy...rge.jpgHalogen Projectors are starting to be used now in most basic level cars today. Basically in front of the lightbulb is a round looking lense in front of it and the light shines through that and provides a nice clean cutoff in front of you.http://www.customlightz.com/gallery/...9_large.jpgHID Projectors now are top of the line. These are similar to Halogen Projectors, but the lense are designed to be used with HID and it provides a lovely nice crispy cutoff in front of you. These are found in more high end cars for example the Honda S2000. You can retrofit a HID Projector into your stock headlight housings. This has become very popular.http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/c...2/hid6ia.jpgIf your friends told you not to buy Projector Headlights they were probably talking about the ones you see on eBay like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/96-98...ayphotohosting The Halogen Projector in the eBay ones are usually crap. Sometimes the lighting is no better then the stock OEM ones. Most people I know buy the eBay ones and swap out the Halogen Projector for a HID Projector and just install a HID Kit in there.Other than that Halogen Projectors are pretty good. Just don't go cheap on them. Find a good website that sells them and then get a good pair of PIAA or Sylvania bulbs to go with them.http://www.andysautosport.com/

Projector headlights works just like a projector, it uses lens to maximize the output of your bulbs. Good thing about projector lamp is that the lens can be modified (by manufacturer) to concentrate light output at a certain location...so for example, a non-projector headlights lets you see 50 yards ahead, with a projector, they can project the light up to 100 yards ahead (example). If you look at the headlights of cars like Acura TSX, BMW 3-series, or even the new Honda Accord Coupes, you will see a ping-pong shaped glass in each of their headlights, thats what a projector looks like.

I have ebay halogen projectors on my accord...the light output is horrible. I have to run my brights way too often because it's so dangerous I can't even see with my regular headlights on. And I'm using the top of the line Silverstar bulbs. They might look nice, but if you plan on upgrading your headlights, save your money and invest in something you won't regret.
