I have a 2005 Honda Civic. I travel on the interstate alot, commuting to work. I'm beginning to hear a whine that sounds like it's coming from the front driver's side wheel (when the car gets up over 40-50 mph). The sound resembles the sound of a motorcycle. I've taken it up to 60 mph, shut the car off, and I still hear the whine. I've read some posts online that said that the noise should be obvious when making a right or left turn due to the stress put on the bearing at those times, but I tried it and didn't notice a change. I know that the bearings are not that expensive and was considering changing them out. Any tips or tricks for wheel bearing removal for the novice?I didn't mention that my suspition is a bad wheel bearing. The car also has 140k miles on it (long commute to Orlando for work).

To me it sounds like it could be a wheel bearing but that seems unlikely because I have never had a wheel bearing go on a Honda. Anyway, this web page may help http://www.aa1car.com/library/2003/bf50360.htm

If it doesn't sound like grinding metal or clanging metal but rapidly flopping rubber like a motorcycle, then you should inspect your outer axle boots.Park your car and turn your front wheel all the way to the right. Then look inside your wheel well and inspect the rubber boots for your CV joints along the axle rod behind the wheel. If you notice any tears or shiny grease splattered around the area, then you need to replace your outer CV boots.http://www.hondacivicrepairs.com/boo...0Civic&id=8The CV boot looks like a black rubber plunger that isolates grease and provides lubrication for your CV axle joints. When this rubber boots tears, it will slowly allow grease to escape, exposing your CV joints, and the tear will expand producing odd rubber knocking or flopping sounds.A new CV quick boot kit can cost you just $20 from your local auto parts store.Good luck!
