Default What are the advantages to a full catback system?

I drive a 06 civic 1.8LI went into my local muffler shop and was told that I would lose performance if I were to install a full catback system at 2.25" piping. If there's a loss in performance, why do people get the job done? Is it just for sound or are there any advantages to doing a full catback?

The catback will increase power in the higher rpm's. You will notice better acceleration on the highway but inversely your lower speed acceleration will be negatively effected because of a lack of backpressure created. If I was the owner of an n/a car then I would just keep the stock system. If you want a better sound for cheap just get a KN filter. It will help with fuel economy too. However, a cat-back will start to show gains when you add more mods to the car. If a cat-back was the only thing you planned on doing dont bother, just get a muffler. If you want to do a lot of mods in the future then, yes, get the cat-back.

First, DO NOT GO TO A LOCAL MUFFLER SHOP!!! They are all dumb as hell and try to rip you off. But, yes there are advantages, I have a full exhaust on my 240, and it lets the car breathe a little easier...plus I can get a three foot flame to shoot out the back. In the long run if you are planning to add more performance parts in the future it will add up. But then again I have a turbocharged car, it may be differnet for a stock N/A motor.
